Tallahassee has not had much of a winter this year. I’ve scraped ice off my car maybe once and most days I am in a t-shirt by lunch time. Yesterday morning I woke up and the temperature outside was 61degrees. On a normal Florida day that would mean that by 3pm, it would be 80degrees outside.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. When I left work at 4p it was 46 degrees and windy outside. I had planned to meet Matt for a run so I of course brought running clothes meant for an 80 degree run. But we figured how bad could it be? I was freezing. The run only got worse from there.
About .75 into our run, I needed a bathroom. Luckily we knew of one nearby so crisis averted. After my pit stop, we ran for a little while, hating every step. We felt slow, and we were. My whole body was sore from my Rowlates class and my hands, ears, fingers, face, etc was freezing. Northern friends, please stop making fun of me, my Florida blood is very weak and I swear it felt like -10.
Our plan was to do 3 miles but we decided that 1.75 was plenty long enough and took a shortcut back to where we parked. Or so we thought. Our short cut was actually a long cut. We got lost on tiny roads with no sidewalks and plenty of cars but finally found our way back to our warm, heated cars. Brr.
All day I had been craving Greek meatballs so after the hottest, longest shower I have ever taken, that is exactly what we had.
To make greek meatballs you will need:
- ground turkey
- minced garlic
- diced onion
- crumbled feta
- sundried tomatoes
- egg
- lil bit of breadcrumbs
- dash basil
- dash cumin
- spinach (I didn’t use spinach last night but usually throw some in there)
Bake, slice in half and place in a pita pocket with tzatzki sauce
For tzatzki:
- one container greek yogurt, plain
- couple slices of cucumber
- minced garlic
- dill
- half lemon, juiced
Put in a food processor for a few spins. Enjoy.
These were wonderful and really hit the spot. I then laid in bed watching the Oprah Lance Armstrong interview. You guys watch it? It pretty much went the way I thought it would and don’t think it will change anyone’s opinion one way or the other. I will be traveling tonight and won’t see the second half so you guys let me know if anything crazy happens during tonight’s interview, ok? Thanks
Please tell me a story about being a running wimp so I feel better about my horrible tundra run.
Are you a fan of Greek food?
Yesssssssss it’s my favorite!

/ January 18, 2013Hello! I’ve been a lurker for a few weeks now
It’s been just hovering above freezing here in the UK, often with a wind chill of at least -3 C (about 27 F) so my sympathy is limited at the moment! I HAVE to get out for a run in the snow tomorrow because otherwise I will fail with my half-marathon training and I’ve already skipped on Thursday’s session. Hopefully now that I’ve said that, I won’t chicken out!!
Wimp story:
A few years ago I went orienteering and part of the course was on an extremely exposed golf course (on top of a ridge) where the rain was horizontal, and felt like needles when it landed on my bare legs (back then I didn’t own a pair of full-length running trousers) so after 25 mins I bailed, retired from the race and returned to the car where I sat miserably until my friends returned. By then the sun was out and although the wind was cold, it was a stunning day. I’ve never felt more of a wimp!!
If I’m honest, I think you guys weren’t running fast enough if you were that cold!
I really enjoy reading your blog, btw!
Runner Girl Eats
/ January 19, 2013Thanks! We def were not running fast enough. Our bodies were telling us it was a rest day and we should’ve listened. Oh well, at least we got some road time in

/ January 18, 2013I think I’ll be making those Greek meatballs at some point this weekend, they look and sound fabulous! I’m from Southern California and I think anything below 65 is cold. At that point its time to bust out the thermals and winter coats! Last week temps were dropping into the low 30′s in the morning, around 10 I thought it would be warm enough, I wore shorts (dumb decision) and a light weight jacket and figured I’d be good to go. Not even half way into my run I decided it was near freezing and if I continued I’d surely have hypothermia. Needless to say, I turned around and ran home!

/ January 19, 2013Ha! I’m with u! Below 50 is arctic! Let me know if you like the meatballs

/ January 19, 2013I don’t run in the rain. Period. I will run in cold, snow, heat. But not rain. Ever.

/ January 19, 2013I’m not a big fan of rain running either but occasionally enjoy a drizzle at the end of a run.

/ January 19, 2013I went for a run earlier this week in like 10 deg temps. My phone (which is supposed to be cold-proof-whatever that means?) died during the run. When saw that, I gave myself permission to run straight home and not to drag the run out at all.

/ January 19, 2013Ha I have def quit running before because of dead electronics

/ January 20, 2013I must say I am jealous of 46 degrees. It’s been under 20 degrees every day here in Utah, but of course I don’t try to run in it. I HATE being cold during a run. I love greek food so I am definitely going to be trying your yummy recipe. I was looking for another way to use my ground turkey:)
Runner Girl Eats
/ January 21, 2013Ouch under 20…I don’t even know what I would do about that. Hope you like the meatballs!
