5 miles and too many Lucky Charms

Thanks to watching the super creppy tv show The Following Friday night, I tossed and turned all night. Next time I will make sure to watch that show at 4pm in a very well lit house…and my eyes closed. I was exhausted all day at work and ready to crash as soon as I got home. When I walked through the door, my nostrils perked up when they smelled the lamb Matt had in the oven.

photo 1-74Matt has been on a lamb kick lately and I can’t say that I mind. Especially because we usually have roasted rosemary potatoes along with it and those are one of my favorite things on earth. I was craving something sweet but far too lazy to actually drive somewhere, even if it was for fro yo. That’s how you know I was really tired. Luckily I remembered that last week in a moment of weakness I bought a box of Lucky Charms, my fav cereal ever.

Magically addictive.

Magically addictive.

I eat Lucky Charms about once a week when I am at work and they are available in single serving, 1oo calorie bowls. I NEVER buy them for the house because I am afraid I will not have any self control. Last night I proved that thought right. About 20 seconds after finishing this monster sized bowl of sugar, my stomach started to hurt. Lucky Charms is definitely meant to be enjoyed in small portions. After popping a Tums and chugging some water, I passed out around 10:30pm. I am an embarrassment to 27 year olds everywhere.

This morning we had a long (by our standards) run on the calendar. We finally got out the door around 8:15am and I was starving thanks to my new plan of ‘if I don’t put anything in my stomach before a run then it can’t get upset with me’. I may have been grumpy at the start of the run and ravenous at the end, but I was able to make it 5 miles so I guess the plan worked.

Ignore that 7:28. That must have been a mistake because my legs don't do 7:anything.

The whole run was done in my absolute favorite running weather, 55 degrees and partly cloudy, so that definitely helped my mood. We ended up doing an avg pace of 9:42. We ran through Florida State’s campus and I am so happy we did. College kids are still sleeping off the night before at 8am so its quiet and empty. I think we only passed 4 people and 1 car the whole time.

Empty trails=my favorite trails.

Despite what this picture shows, FSU is no stranger to hills so I got some much need hill work. New goal: hills once a week to prevent my legs from getting lazy.

After running we went to Publix to get some food for me to eat/inhale. Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach? Rookie mistake. I bought a cantaloupe, watermelon, and chocolate milk to go along with my toast and Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter & Co:

Cantaloupe is to me what watermelon is to this girl. I went back for about four more servings of cantaloupe and chocolate milk. Fruit always tastes better after a good run.

Favorite post-run eat/drink?

Chocolate milk and cantaloupe

What is your favorite running weather?

anything that I can wear a long sleeve dryfit without being too hot or too cold

  1. I’m with you on the run-on-an-empty-stomach thing. I may be starving at the end, but it’s better than being uncomfortable during the run!

  2. I haven’t had Lucky Charms in forever! I agree that running on an empty stomach is best. I hate that full feeling when I’m trying to do anything that’s intensely physical!

  3. LOVE cantaloupe!! I definitely prefer it over watermelon. I just wish it was actually in season right now so that it wasn’t ridiculously expensive. Plus, they just aren’t as sweet and juicy as they are in the summer. Soon enough though, right? ;)

  4. I can only run on an empty stomach as well. If I eat beforehand, it’s the worst. I’m also really slow when I eat before. YUCK! I really love anything with peanut butter after a run, but lately it’s been a smoothie with greek yogurt, vanilla coconut milk, peanut butter, and some sort of fruit. Heaven :) I also love oatmeal after a run.

As much as I hate the cold, I really love running in weather that is between 50-60 degrees. I did 6.2 miles yesterday in 52-degree weather and barely looked like the mess that I usually do at the end of a longer run.

  5. I do the same thing with just about any kind of cereal that I enjoy. Luckily, my favorites are pretty bland ones like cinnamon puffins. And I run on an empty stomach. I don’t even like having a lot of water in me. My stomach just feels bloated and gross when I’m out there. But after? Oh man I’ll eat the entire room.

  9. I love Lucky Charms. It is hard not to have a gigantic bowl when you eat them, isn’t it? I guess this means I’m an embarrassment to all THIRTY-seven year olds! :)
That trail looks beautiful. Glad you had a good run!

  10. I have this massive craving for Lucky Charms now! We usually only get them for fun on St. Paddy’s day.

I love, love running in mid-40s and sunny weather, something about never feeling too hot – weird since I always complain about being too cold.

  11. I am a strictly coffee only before runs kinda girl. For long runs I’d force myself to eat a few bites of a protein bar before hand but couldn’t handle anything more.

  12. I run on an empty stomach as well! I’ve had far to many experiences with food in the tummy during a run to test those waters again! Fruit after a run is the equivalent to a frozen cocktail in the tropics, just you know goes hand in hand!

  13. I love Lucky Charms and totally agree that I can’t keep them in the house. I’ve totally overeaten one of those brownie microwavable mugs and haven’t eaten on since. Oops!

  15. I love running on empty because then I don’t feel sick, but I can never go to long without food. Five miles is such a great distance…nice job! I have been eating way to much cereal lately and usually after 10:00 p.m. yikes! I”m with you on chocolate milk after a run. I love seeing all your cooking adventures. You are daring to be cooking with anchovies:)
