Welcome to my blog about my never ending love of food, new obsession with running and daily adventures. You can expect lots of avocado, red velvet, references to 90's television and poorly taken iPhone photos. Thanks for stopping by!

It’s Groundhog Day…again…

There are three holidays that make me obnoxiously happy: Christmas, my birthday (yes, it’s a holiday) and Groundhog Day. You read that correctly, Groundhog Day. I love the idea of everyone celebrating something as simple as the shadow of a cute animal and the use of silly words like prognosticator. And top hats? Yep, they are awesome, too. This past June I even looked into hotels and flights to Puxasatawney , PA to witness the prognosticating in person but they were already booked up for February 2ndApparently I am not the only lover of today

And of course, Groundhog Day is one of my all time favorite movies.

**Just a heads up, if you have not seen this movie you will probably not understand 90% of this post.

All of my Groundhog Days start out the same with an early morning phone call from my father in which he says “Okay, campers, rise and shine, and don’t forget your booties cause it’s cooooold out there today”, in which I reply “Its coooold out there everyday”. And as I get ready for the day, I watch the AMC all day Groundhog Day marathon. This movie has a bit of a cult following and I have definitely drank the crazy Groundhog juice.

Yea, Phil...like the groundhog.

Yea, Phil…like the groundhog.

Matt had never seen the movie until I forced him to watch it on our first Groundhog Day. He is not quite a fanatic like me which is probably a good thing. I think at least one person in this relationship should be semi-sane. But he entertains my ridiculousness and we now have a tradition of making Groundhog Day a day that we would want to live over and over again. So today we are loading the bikes on the car, driving to St. George Island for a day of biking, seafood eating and strolling along the beach.  And then tonight I will pop in my Groundhog Day DVD to watch Bill Murray relive his own personal hell in Punxsutawney while I snack on some yummy dessert and quote the entire movie word for word.

What is your favorite Bill Murray movie?

I think mine is pretty obvious…

Do you have an offbeat favorite holiday?

I also really like Veterans Day…but I think that is because it is my birthday eve ;)

  1. Wait I’m dying right now, even at 5:50am imagining all of this! That is AWESOME that your dad calls you in the morning to go through that routine. I love little quirks like that :)

  2. It is also my parents wedding anniversary. Thanksgiving was taking top spot for me. Not any more. So I will 4th of July, as long as we can keep the dogs away from the fireworks.

  3. I LOVE that you guys make today a special day, that’s so sweet!!! I don’t think I really have a favorite Bill Murray movie because I don’t really watch a lot of movies (I’m a weirdo). I don’t really have a favorite offbeat holiday, but I love St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween.

    Enjoy your Groundhog’s Day!

  6. I love this! I think celebrating silly little holidays is the greatest thing ever. Bill Murray actually lives here, so my goal for Groundhog Day was to find him. Unfortunately, I came nowhere near achieving that goal, but it would’ve been the greatest Groundhog Day ever if I had!
