First long run of the training schedule: DONE. Thanks to some gorgeous weather, I was able to sleep in (8am) Sunday before our 6 mile run (don’t laugh, that is long for these legs). Unfortunately, sleeping in meant that by the time I woke up I was already hungry and too impatient to eat. Empty tank run it was.
Also, I was wayyy overdressed. Apparently it was colder in our house than it was outside because I most definitely should have been running in shorts and short sleeve shirt. I felt slow and tired but finished 6 miles at my goal of under 10 min pace, including one water break.
This run definitely reminded me that along with my running training plan, I need an eating training plan. Saturday was a fantastic and fun day but only eating a small breakfast and a dinner made up of mostly chips and guacamole and almost no water, I had no drive for running Sunday. Goal for next week: Eat properly the day before my long run.
After running I was super thirsty and so hungry that the thought of food made me nauseous. Anyone else ever experience this? We headed to Bagel, Bagel and Matt forced me to eat something. I ordered the only thing that sounded semi-tolerable:
I felt better after nibbling on the hasbrown but only finished half of the chocolate milk because there were 420 calories in that bottle. WHAT?! I am all for some sweet indulgence but this def needed to be split into two servings.
We made a quick stop at Publix on the way home and Valentines Day is in full bloom.
I used to work at a flower shop in high school so I am just now recovering from my Dozen Red Rose Bouquet PTSD enough to start to enjoy the holiday. And by holiday, I mean candy. I have instructed Matt not to buy any candy until the day after Valentine’s Day so that we can buy twice as much candy for half as much money. I am counting down the minutes to February 15th :)
When I got home I hopped in the shower then downed some cantaloupe. I headed to the living room amd turned on the tv while I was stretching and what do I see? Clueless. I finished stretching, sat on the couch sipping my iced pomegranate chai tea and talked along with Cher word for word.
Clueless came out 18 years ago and I would still love to wear 90% of Cher’s wardrobe.
What is your go-to day before a run meal? Morning of meal?
Favorite Alicia Silverstone movie?
Clueless. Or the Aerosmith music videos.
Valentine’s Day: Sweet or Hallmark scam?
I think it’s a little bit of both.

/ February 11, 2013Every time Clueless is on tv, I have to watch the whole movie. So classic, and the fact that it was from 18 years ago makes me feel really old..lol.
I don’t really have a go-to day before a run meal, I just try to eat clean and fairly light so I don’t feel like I’m dragging the whole time. I also try to drink a ton of water. Great work yesterday!

/ February 11, 2013I felt sooooo old when I realized how old the movie is too!
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom
/ February 11, 2013I don’t have a go-to day before a meal run, but I just try to eat foods that won’t make me gassy or anything so I don’t feel bloated and gross during the run. And I always do an empty tank run, unless I wake up super hungry or am running more than 6 miles, in which case I’ll drink a glass of water and have a scoop of peanut butter.
I’m with you on waiting until Valentine’s Day is over to get the candy. I JUST finished my Halloween candy, so it’s time to stock up now. I think it’s a nice holiday, but maybe I’m one of the weird single girls who actually doesn’t feel miserable and alone because I don’t have anyone to celebrate with? Or maybe it’s the fact that I just ended a three year relationship and am enjoying my single life. Talk to me next year if I’m still single and we’ll see if my perspective has changed.

/ February 11, 2013Enjoy you’re solo valentines day! My attitude about the day has always been the same regardless of my dating life. Just have a nice night and enjoy some chocolate

/ February 11, 2013You go, girl! Six miles is long for me too. I haven’t run more than four miles since October (that sounds awful now that I think about it, haha!). And I’m definitely understanding the too-hungry-nausea thing. It sucks!
Runner Girl Eats
/ February 11, 2013Ah it’s the worst! I know I need to eat but I the thought of it makes me ill lol

/ February 11, 2013Clueless is such a great movie! And girl, 6 miles is long…that’s awesome! I usually just have some sort of a kashi bar or larabar or something like that before a run. I get nauseous if I exercise with food in me, so I try to just have something small and plain before.

/ February 11, 2013Thanks! I need to start experimenting with some pre run eats.
Katherine @ Neon Blonde Runner
/ February 11, 2013Congrats on your long run!
I eat something heavy on the carbs the night before (non-greasy gourmet pizza is a great carb/protein combo) and then I eat a granola bar or half a bagel for breakfast and about 16 oz of water right when I wake up. Then I run and it’s SUPER important to get a protein rich source into your body within 20 minutes of finishing in order to build up strong muscles, so I usually drink milk or a protein shake or something like that afterward.
But everyone has their own system that works for them, so don’t necessarily listen to what I say
Nice work!!

/ February 11, 2013Thanks! I love chocolate milk after runs.

/ February 11, 2013I love Clueless!! I would suggest eating simple carbs like gu packs or shot bloks during your runs, that will help a lot with post long run nausea!

/ February 11, 2013Ah I really love Clueless

/ February 11, 2013The day before a long run, it is DH’s spaghetti. No question. I PR’d twice on that spaghetti last fall. The morning of is usually just coffee. IF I eat anything, it is cream of wheat or a protein bar.

/ February 11, 2013I am a huge fan of spaghetti before a run! It’s my go to.

/ February 11, 2013Yayyy for long runs! I’d definitely eat at least a granola bar before you head out. I’m learning the hard way for sure and I’m finding that I have so much more energy if I eat breakfast. I love how much your shoes stand out!
Oh, and the chocolate milk- it’s probably because it was whole milk. I try to buy skim or 1% and the calories are much more reasonable. It’s too good not to have!
Runner Girl Eats
/ February 11, 2013Thanks! The milk was def whole, it was all they had. I had half and took the rest home for a future recovery drink.

/ February 11, 2013Nice long running!!!
Day after halloween and day after V-day is epic chocolate day for my mom and I. I.can’t.wait.

/ February 11, 2013Thanks! Oh after Halloween is another fantastic day!

/ February 11, 2013Fueling properly before a run is KEY for me, so i totally hear you on this. I’m a big proponent of nut butter (I’ll smear it on just about anything haha) it sounds like you’re on the right track though with the running/eating plan. You kicked that 6 miles’ butt!
Runner Girl Eats
/ February 12, 2013Thanks! Ideally I’d be up early enough to eat a banana before I run but sometimes and empty run is the best option for me.
Susie
/ February 14, 2013I know every. Single. Word. To that movie. Every single one. It’s terrifying.
On the subject of eating pre-long-run, I don’t worry about it too much the day before unless it is ten miles or longer distances (in terms of what I eat) but I make sure to lessen my hard core fiber and protein intake as the day goes on and end the day with some straight up carbs-oats or toast with pb or a muffin or something like that. I always have ice cream before bed, so that’s a given lol. Day of, I go with carb and spread. For halfway and races, my go to is a travel serving of Special K original (always at hotels!), a clif z honey graham bar, and half a banana. It’s worked for me so far! Good luck figuring it out!
O and I also have a cup of half caf coffee or black tea and a water before.
And wait an hour ….. Clear things out a bit if yaknowwhaddamean
Runner Girl Eats
/ February 14, 2013I wish I liked coffee just for that reason lol and no shame about clueless. That and 10 things about you are two movies I can quote backwards and forwards.
