Wedding Update: the Bridal Party

This past year I was in two weddings. Both weddings were for friends that I have known since my freshman year of college and had so many fun and wonderful memories with. One of the weddings was a blast from start to finish and I was honored to be there for all of it. The other was hell on earth and we haven’t spoken since.

So obviously when Matt and I had the bridal party talk, we discussed how we did not want to look back on our wedding photos 20 years from now and see people standing next to us that we no longer speak to. We also agreed that we wanted to keep the bridal party on the smaller size, 3-4 maids/groomsmen max.

I don’t know when people normally ask everyone to be in the bridal party so Matt and I just did is as soon as we knew who we wanted. And it didn’t take us much time at all to decide.

I knew my sister would be my maid of honor. We haven’t always been BFF (far from it!) but we have finally fallen into our groove and I couldn’t imagine anyone else being a better maid of honor. I asked her just two days after the proposal and she responded “Well, I’m planning the whole thing anyway so I might as well” yep. Sounds like, Kathy.

When I told Matt that I wanted Sheri to be in the bridal party, he responded, “Obvi”. Sheri and I have known each other since high school, but really became good friends in college and after. We talk all the time about everything and nothing at all and she really knows Matt and me as a couple.

Stephanie was the first friend I called to tell that Matt proposed. In fact, she has been the first person I call for most big news since we were in 1st grade. I am pretty sure we spent more time together than apart from the ages of 7-17 and no matter how long we go between phone chats (she is in Brooklyn now) we always pick up right where we left off.

Vicky, currently living in London, is my far, far away friend. We met in the 6th grade and have been besties ever since. We’ve done everything from skipping school to tan on her trampoline to riding donkeys in Greece so I knew she just had to be a part of this as well.

Having been in weddings I know that it is a big commitment (dress, travel, shower, bachelorette party, etc.) and honestly, I was pretty nervous about asking the girls to be in my wedding. What if they all said no and I had to stand up there alone?! So I did what I do every time I get nervous…found a way to turn it into a joke.

I emailed this to my maids along with the easy-out that I understand it is a lot to ask and they can totally say no and I would still love them forever:

Luckily my friends are all amazing and sent back replies along the lines of “Hell yes. I will rock that dress.” That’s why I love them.

Matt wanted in on the photoshop fun too so he emailed this to his groomsmen (two high school/college friends and two brothers):

Let's hope everyone returns with all of their teeth.

With all of these awesome people, we are most definitely putting the party in bridal party.

How did you ask your bridal party to be in the wedding?

How many people were in your wedding?

  1. I LOVE how you asked your bridesmaids to be at your wedding and I will be stealing this idea for my own wedding when it happens! :)

  2. I’m at LEAST a few years away from doing all this stuff, but I love reading your wedding updates! I feel like it’s making me prepared for all the planning stuff when it eventually comes. There’s so much to think about!

As for my future bridal party, my sister will be my maid of honor, and I’ll probably keep it small like yours. I’d definitely have some of my Bona’s girls up there.

  3. Haha I love how you asked them to be your bridesmaids. I feel the response your sister gave you is similar to what my best friends would have said to me.

  5. Wedding can be so much fun :)
    Cute way of asking them!!

I created puzzles that had the words “will you be my Maid of Honor?” and “will you be my Bridesmaid?” on them and then before the chicago marathon (I’m living in NC now and my family is in WI so they came down to watch me run) we all went out for a pre race dinner and I gave them the puzzles then (this was a week after we got engaged so it worked out perfectly that I could ask them all in person).

    • Aw that is so cute! I knew I wouldn’t be able to ask in person with everyone scatter across the world but liked that I was able to do something a little fun :)

  6. So cute!! My best friend showed up at my house with a single flower and a card asking if I would be her bridesmaid! I’m not even dating anyone right now, but I have a very good idea of who I will be asking to stand up with me!

  10. That is freakin’ hilarious. You guys are a hoot.

I love what you said about wanting to be able to look back on your wedding and still be just as close or closer with those people you shared that day with, I feel the exact same way. It’s sad to have been in weddings and then never talk to that person again, but for some reason that’s how it goes. I will definitely be sticking to just those close close friends when my time comes.
